MFA Thesis Exhibitions to Open Friday!

University of Manitoba School of Art and School of Art Gallery present two solo MFA thesis exhibitions.

Monica Mercedes Martinez

‘Everyone is Fallen except for us Fallen….’

Monica Mercedes Martinez’s MFA show, Everyone is Fallen except us Fallen…, utilizes her innate sense of materials and processes to explore events that lead to the Chilean coup in 1973. Her exhibition showcases a large sculpture that is the result of years of research and experimentation.

Monica Mercedes Martinez is a mixed media object maker with ceramics playing an intrinsic role in her artistic practice. As a South American who grew up on the Canadian Prairies, she uses her practice to facilitate discussion about the historical foundations that we exploit to define who we are and where we belong.

Gurpreet Sehra

‘In Flux’

Gurpreet Sehra’s MFA show, In Flux, examines her relationship to Sikh-Punjabi masculinity and hip hop-based identities in the diaspora. Her exhibition showcases a diverse array of traditional and contemporary media, including painting, silkscreen, photography, video, and conceptual installation.

Gurpreet Sehra is a multidisciplinary artist. She grew up in the Greater Toronto Area in Ontario, Canada. In her current practice she sources found video and text to address the various negative shifts in perception that have occurred for turbaned Sikh-Punjabi males, in the post-9/11 period.
