The case of Sukh Dhaliwal: another reason to file your taxes

A longtime Surrey businessman and politician has stepped down from the B.C. Liberal race to represent the Surrey-Panorama riding after income tax charges were revealed. Sukh Dhaliwal, who was the Liberal member of Parliament for NewtonNorth Delta from 2006 to 2011, was acclaimed to run in the next election, before Christy Clark ordered a review of his candidacy over tax evasion charges he is facing.

Indian-born Dhaliwal, who immigrated to Canada in 1984, faces six counts of tax evasion for allegedly failing to file returns for a company he runs with his wife.

The charges were sworn against Dhaliwal on Oct. 15, 2012, 15 days prior to being acclaimed as the candidate for Surrey-Panorama. The Liberal Party had not been made aware of the charges until a news report on February 6, 2013.

Dhaliwal announced his decision to step down on Friday afternoon, February 8, in Surrey.
